Crossing Guard

Town of Tillsonburg is looking for a responsible Crossing Guard to join our By- Law Services Team. The successful candidate will be responsible for escorting school children across the roadway safely at designated school crossing locations, in accordance with: the Highway Ontario Traffic Act, The Occupational Health and Safety Act, and the Town of Tillsonburg guidelines and procedures.

Hourly rate: $19.50 - $22.82/hour
Weekly hours: up to 10 hours/week

Responsibilities:
  • Must obey all established traffic safety regulations to ensure children (going to and from school) are assisted in crossing roadways at designated locations.
  • To wear safety equipment (eg. safety vest) supplied by the Town of Tillsonburg at all times while on duty.
  • To report any incidents or accidents involving traffic and/or children to the supervisor and appropriate police or school officials.
  • Have good working knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act and Occupational Health & Safety Act as it relates to the job, to be aware and comply with Conditions of Employment and instructions as provided by the Town of Tillsonburg.
  • To arrive at crossings at specified times and remain at crossing throughout specified time.
  • Attends all scheduled meetings and training sessions for school crossing guards.
  • Aware of safe work practices relating to job responsibilities and have basic understanding of the Occupational Health & Safety Act as it relates to the work environment.
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures for the Town.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
  • OSSD or equivalent.
  • Strong public relations abilities with good verbal and listening communication skills.
  • Must be alert, able to maintain a high degree of concentration, with visual and hearing ability to recognize traffic at a safe a distance (approx 300 feet).
  • Ability to walk pedestrians safely across busy intersections and react safely and quickly to traffic conditions.
  • Must be able to display a school crossing stop sign (weight up to 5 lbs) in an upright position so that it is visible to vehicular traffic approaching each direction and extend the other arm out parallel for one – three minutes on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to perform all physical requirements of the activities.
  • Must be able to perform duties outside in all diverse weather conditions.
  • Successful applicant must obtain acceptable security clearance (must provide a Criminal Record Check including the vulnerable sector and pardoned sexual offenders) from the Ontario Provincial Police at the applicant’s expense.
  • Medical certificate may be required upon request.
  • Supply of a personal vehicle may be required.
