The Town of Tillsonburg is looking to hire a Parks and Cemetery Operator/Heavy Equipment Operator.  This position is a hybrid position between the Parks and Cemetery and Public Works divisions.

Hourly rate: Parks & Cemetery Operator I - $26.93 - $31.50/hour
                     Heavy Equipment Operator - $29.71 - $34.76/hour
Weekly hours: 40

Parks & Cemeteries – April to October
Responsible for day to day grounds keeping and maintenance tasks at the Tillsonburg Cemetery and the Pioneer Cemetery and for assisting with interments.  Responsible for day to day Parks operations including grounds keeping, maintenance, special event support and other duties as assigned.

Public Works – November to March
Responsible for the day to day maintenance operations of Town infrastructure including but not limited to the Town Transfer Station, roads, bridges, sewers, drainage systems, sidewalks, street signs, etc.  This includes snow removal, asphalt repair, sewer repair and cleaning, stump removal, sign and fence installation and other duties as assigned.

The incumbent will operate various light and heavy equipment as well as various computers, tablets and software applications to carry out assigned tasks

Responsibilities

Parks & Cemeteries Component Responsibilities
While serving in the Parks & Cemeteries Division, the incumbent will be responsible for the duties outlined in the job description of a Parks & Cemeteries Operator I, including:
  • Perform daily, weekly and annual maintenance, grounds keeping, horticultural, snow removal and inspection tasks at parks, sports fields, downtown public spaces, trails and other town-managed locations.
  • Perform maintenance and janitorial tasks at parks and cemetery buildings.
  • Perform special event set-up, support, and tear-down tasks.
  • Perform tree trimming and assists with tree removals.
  • Assist with set up/removal and undertakes regular inspections of toboggan hills.
  • Performs Cemetery maintenance and grounds keeping tasks as assigned.
  • Assist with providing Cemetery customer service functions including showing families plots/niches for sale.
  • Assist with preparing for and carrying out in-ground and niche interments.
  • Make recommendations to Parks and Cemeteries Supervisor or designate on procedural issues.
  • Fill in for Parks & Cemetery Operator II and/or Parks & Cemeteries Supervisor as required.

Public Works Responsibilities
While serving in the Public Works Division, the incumbent will be responsible for the duties outline in the job description of a Heavy Equipment Operator, including:
  • Check serviceability and operate in a safe manner all assigned heavy and light equipment such as 1 ton and ½ ton trucks, front end loaders, graders, 5 ton plow trucks, tractors with various attachments, sidewalk machines, paint striping equipment, and all other pieces of equipment associated with work in the Public Works Division.
  • Perform duties of winter snow clearing operations including plowing and salting of roadways, parking lots and sidewalks using assigned heavy and light equipment and snow shoveling and snow blowing as required.
  • Report road conditions, damage and vandalism to Roads Foreperson.
  • Provide general roadside maintenance including trimming and removal of small trees and brush within the road allowance, street and parking lot line painting, debris and litter pickup, loose leaf collection, roadside weed cutting and dust control applications.
  • Inspect, clean and repair culverts, catch basins, curb, gutters and sewers.
  • Perform roadway repairs including patching of potholes with cold or hot mix asphalt
  • Repair, replace and/or install signs, fences, safety devices, sidewalks, drainage pipes or any other road related infrastructure.
  • Provide traffic control and setup of traffic barricades for safety zones, detours and special events following OTM Book 7 guidelines.
  • Maintain radio contact with Roads Foreperson or office while performing work throughout the Town.
Shared Responsibilities
While serving in either Division, the incumbent will:
  • Safely operate vehicles, tractors, mowers and other powered equipment in accordance with operating procedures.
  • Maintain equipment logs and records of work performed as required to meet operating and legislated requirements.
  • Carry out all duties and responsibilities using due diligence and accordance with Ontario Health and Safety Act and regulations and in compliance with Town operating and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain good working relationships with Town staff
  • Liaise with the public, user groups and contractors as required.
  • Recommend cost effective measures for operational issues and improvements.
  • Participate in and provide input to the development and review of policies, procedures, standards and programs related to Divisional operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s License with a DZ Class endorsement.
  • Previous experience in public works, operations, landscaping, grounds maintenance, and/or horticultural trades.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation (i.e. – OHSA, Minimum Maintenance Standards).
  • Good knowledge of traffic control procedures including Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7 practices.
  • Basic knowledge and experience in snow removal and salt application for an urban setting.
  • Basic computer skills including use of typical office software, email clients, and web browsers on computers, tablets, and electronic devices.
  • Ability to problem solve and use good judgement.
  • Ability to lift up to 60lbs.
